Q I love country decorating and crafts and want to create a special bedroom—cheerful and clutter-free, but of course, with lots of character.

A Colorful and country, the Donna Dewberry Collection of wallcoverings by Brewster (featured in the photo) is perfect for your needs. The main pattern has a hand-painted feeling to it. The swag, artfully placed below the molding, adds a graceful note and serves to accent the bed. This same border is used on a simple trunk, creating a custom piece (and also a grand place to hold the quilt at night). Everything else is kept simple to accentuate the beauty of the patterns. The bed sports a basic headboard that can be made from paneling and an ogee molding. White muslin chairs are simple, yet most importantly, comfortable. After all, this is a room that should be a place to relax and pamper your senses.

Q I have a very small, very dull space off the kitchen that I would like to do something with. It would be nice to have a cozy nook where I could sit and read, or have tea or a luncheon with a friend. Any suggestions?

A You’re right: a nook is a great place to give yourself a much-deserved rest from the world. The room pictured is a perfect example of such a case. The wallcoverings are from Imperial’s Marjolein Bastin collection and include a light, airy floral on the upper portion of the wall, anchored with a more complex border. Remember: a border does not have to be at chair-rail height or just below the ceiling. Instead, use it anywhere you want—around windows, doors or in a corner—to achieve any effect you want. A country bench with a soft cushion can be great for sitting or for using with the table. With a little thought, a dull corner can become a delightful getaway.Q I would like to spice up my kitchen.
I have plenty of imagination but very little money. Is this possible?

A The quickest way to add personality to a drab space is with wallcoverings. Select a simple main paper, and then get creative with the borders. This photo features wallcoverings from York’s C.L. Perfect Pear collection. A wide border at ceiling height sets the room’s festive tone. The lower, layered border set at counter height offers an almost architectural detail. Blue cabinets give an added punch, too, for the minimal cost of a few cans of paint. An inexpensive hanging lamp will add yet another bright, lighthearted element.
