More Winning Ways With Scraps
• Cover a switchplate. Remove plate from wall, and then paint with glue and stick-on fabric, cutting flaps to glue over edges for a seamless look. When dry, use an X-acto® knife to cut switch holes. Replace on wall.
• Upholster a frame. Take apart a picture frame and glue foam or quilt batting over frame front. Cover with fabric and secure with staples or glue.
• Wrap a gift. Small boxes or odd-shaped items look unique swathed in a soft patterned coat. If you don’t have enough fabric to go around the item, turn it into a bow instead!
• Make a garland. Hand-stitch or simply staple together different-sized pieces and wrap your garland around a tree, atop a mantel or over a window.
• Craft some coasters. Start with old, stained coasters, or cut out cardboard rounds, then glue fabric over top, secure underneath and glue another cut-to-fit round underneath (leftover felt is perfect for this).
• Stitch a plastic bag caddy. For this simple sewing machine project, take 1⁄2 yard or less, hem ends so they can fit a threading of elastic, then fold fabric piece in half, right sides together, and stitch open side closed (being sure to leave hem ends open for threading). Invert and thread elastic through hems, tying so that each end has a 2- to 3-inch opening. Stuff bags in from top, and pull out from bottom.
• Fashion a sachet. Cut a 6-inch-diameter circle. Place lavender, cedar or herbs in the center, then gather and cinch with ribbon.
• Cover a book. Photo albums look especially great covered in a decorative piece of fabric. Simply measure against covers, cut fabric, and glue to front and over inside flaps.
• Construct a pin cushion. Start with a large round of fabric. Place a metal disk or flat rock in center (to stabilize it when it needs to stand), then place foam and batting in center, cinch with elastic and wrap wire around protruding fabric to make a handle. •
