The Perfect Flower Bed
Four simple steps to a one-of-a-kind conversation piece.

By Raleigh Shook
ou’ve heard of a flower bed, right? But how about a bed—right in the middle of your flowers? Well, it’s an idea just crazy enough to work — and we’ll even show you how. All it takes is a little legwork, and soon you’ll have the garden bed of your dreams!
1. Find an old brass or metal headboard and footboard—preferably inexpensive ones from a junk shop or yard sale.

2. Dig them into place in your garden and make sides with appropriately sized 2x6 boards. Treated boards are best.

3. Fill to top of new frame with good, compost-enriched soil. I use mushroom compost and top soil that’s been screened.

4. Use your imagination! Plant red, white and blue petunias in a quilt pattern, colorful vegetables for an edible bed, or just scatter wildflower seeds for a natural look.

Now stand back and “reap” the compliments of friends and neighbors. Happy gardening!
