After more than 50 years of TV and air-conditioned interiors, Americans are returning to the pastime of porch sitting. We long to reconnect with the outside world, to recapture the sociability that porches offer. When it comes to furnishing porches, give your imagination free reign and make casual comfort the key. Here are five simple steps to get your porch relaxation-ready in a weekend.
Hanging plants instantly set the mood of a romantic veranda. For the strongest impact, choose colorful blooms. Be sure to select varieties that do well in both sun and shade. Petunias and impatiens will work in most climates.

1. A colorful coat of paint makes a good first impression—and it helps unify hodgepodge furnishings. Choose pastels, deep or bright tones, but stick with a color theme. And be sure to use weather-resistant paint, available in a variety of colors and finishes.

2. Lush greenery in potted plants and hanging baskets connects the landscape with the porch. For a twist, hang a series of long wire baskets filled with fragrant blooms around your porch’s perimeter to envelop you and your guests in a colorful garden.

3. A swing or rocking chair is an absolute must. And don’t be stingy with the cushions and pillows! For a wide selection of indoor/outdoor fabrics, go to housefabric.com.

4. Meals always taste better outdoors, so be sure to leave room on the porch for a table and chairs. No frills necessary. For special evenings, add a lacy tablecloth and candlesticks.

5. Incorporate garden elements like a trellis or a picket fence (easily found at a garden center) to spotlight the porch as the perfect transition between indoors and out.

A fresh coat of paint—once a season—gives your porch the clean slate it needs to keep looking fresh. Be sure to use an exterior finish in damp climates and finish with a coat of polyurethane to seal and protect.
