A couple skillfully chooses just the right objects for this budget-friendly makeover.

What’s a coastal home without a hint of seaside appeal? In this mellow living room nook, a trio of seashell boxes shares the space with an old ocean print and other found objects.
You’d never guess it today, but Martha and Charlie Restivo’s cozy beach cottage wasn’t always so bright and cheery. Built in 1939 in Carpinteria, California, the modest bungalow has seen its share of woes over the years, including two close calls with a wrecking ball. Almost demolished to make way for condos, and then rented to less-than-cautious tenants, it had lost a lot of its luster by the time the Restivos took it onbut they didn’t mind one bit.
Enamored with the home’s vintage charm and wealth of natural light, the novice renovators decided to preserve as much as possible, and then re-create or carefully update everything that had been lost. They started by removing all of the old carpeting, revealing a lovely expanse of original fir floors underneath
