The heart of Ohio is beating strong in the charming Midwest town of Granville.
By Janet Mowat
If a living history museum came in the form of a fully functioning small town, its name would be Granville. Nestled in the Welsh Hills just 20 miles east of Columbus, Granville is a charming town with an interesting history, as well as being home to the hilltop campus of Denison University. Established 200 years ago by settlers from Granville, Massachusetts, who were reputed to have moved to the area to escape the harsh coastal winters, Granvilles New England influence is obvious as you drive past the wonderfully maintained private and public homes that stand as testimonials to the towns commitment to preservation. A charming main street (Broadway) invites all to stop and take a stroll through its shops, but dont stop there. Pick up the Granville Historical Societys walking tour, available in various shops and museums around town, for a map with detailed historical and architectural notes. Visit one of Granvilles many museums, like the Granville Historic Museum (open weekends, April 15-October 15, or by appointment: 740-587-3951) to view early furniture, household items and hand tools from the original settlers. Browse through antiques stores like the Greystone Country House, then stop for lunch at the Granville Inn, former site of the Granville Female College, or dinner at the historic Buxton Innthe oldest of its kind in the state. Be sure to take a stroll through the fountain gardens hidden behind this old-time charmer. For more garden splendor, visit Cherry Valley Lodge which, under the care of an attentive landscaping staff, has long-blooming gardens and official arboretum status. Of course, a country-lovers trip to the area wouldnt be complete without at least a drive by the Longaberger Companys 7-story, basket-shaped offices.
